Dating in your 50s and 60s: Your first date guide

Dating in your 50s and 60s in Australia: The single baby boomers guide to first dates.

Tips to dating and finding love for the second time in your fifties and sixties.  If it feels impossible to meet someone in Australia when you are over 50 years of age, think again. Trust us, you are not the only baby boomer who’s a great catch out there.

In fact, there are thousands of eligible single men and women just like you!  Fifty and sixty something’s with marriages over and children grown up. Its the perfect time to get out there and start having fun. So dust yourself off and prepare yourself with our first date tips for a smooth sailing first date.

Your first date – the phone call.

It all starts with the call. When your date calls (or you call your date) to arrange your meeting place be positive and upbeat. Ladies, have a few suggestions, just in case your gentleman caller is stuck for ideas.

Never mention your ex, take off your judgemental hat, don’t jump the gun and make assumptions on the phone call. Remember, your date likely to be as nervous as you are. Have a few questions ready to ask to keep the conversation flowing. Don’t stay on the phone too long.

Meeting face to face on that first date.

Meeting face to face is the fun part. Sure, your knees might be shaking, but this is your opportunity to have an exciting night out, get out of the house and try a new cuisine. So relax, be you, and shine!

I always recommend a first date at a nice restaurant. Dinner works best, maybe try a wine bar, do some research and discover a new place together.

Be positive about everything, even if the food isn’t as great as you imagine or restaurant a bit noisy. Look at the bright side of things. Share a laugh about the experience if it’s really bad. Believe me, you’ll come across in a wonderful way to your date.

What to wear on your first date.

What you wear is really important on your first date – first impressions do last! Don’t dress in your old raggedy clothes or your date will think you haven’t made any effort for them.

Wear clothes that flatter your body shape, invest in some new clothes and get some advice from a stylish friend, a professional stylist or the shop assistant. It’s also a great opportunity for you to get out there and try a new hairstyle, a new colour, or for the ladies some new makeup. Smell good, have clean hair, and wear a fresh fragrance.

How to act on your first date.

Just be the wonderful, natural you. Smile, be friendly, ask questions about your date, take a real interest in them. Regardless of whether you can see yourself with them, simply enjoy the night together. Be warm, friendly and kind.

Don’t be too serious.

Treat your date like an old friend and embrace the fact that you both have the courage to get back out there into the dating scene. You may fall in love with each other over time you may not, one thing’s for sure is you will have a story to tell!
